This is a throwback to how it all started working with GoPro back in 2013. I shot for a month with my band for photos for the Hero3+ Music campaign. Challenges popped up everywhere from finding the best locations to figuring out how to shoot action stills in low light. I know I frustrated my band members with so many re-shoots while I worked through how to get the best shots. I purchased tons of stage lighting, haze machine, mixed studio lights, scoured outdoor locations and just plain worked my butt off to get the shot. On this day we rented the big concert room at Rock and Roll San Diego and invited our friends and family down for a free concert. After which, I sent off my selects to GoPro, what happened next was a whirlwind that began an amazing ongoing journey with an incredible company. This photo we worked so hard to get ended up on billboards, the website, the packaging for the Hero3+, and the side of four buildings from Los Angeles to Seattle including this amazing spot above the Pantages Theater on Hollywood Boulevard. They’d asked me to get shots with my band for the new Hero3+ Music bundled camera and this naturally led to shooting other things as well. Our friends had this beautiful home next to a golf course with a resort-like backyard with a pool and hot tub. As I’m in the pool looking at the surroundings I started getting some ideas for shot. My boy was still small enough that every once in a while he’d ask to sit in my lap on the swing so we could go really high and he’d feel secure. I had strapped the camera around the chains before, I had used a head mount and a chest mount so was thinking it would be cool to give the 3-way arm pole mount to my son as I worked the swing. The higher and more inverted we went, the better the shots got. Only problem was, they still weren’t quite right, and the sky was empty of clouds. I wasn’t feeling it. The next day looked promising so we set out again, this time I paid attention to even the clothes we were wearing, (with help from my wife) and we nailed this shot by mid-morning. The point is, If you have an idea, see it through, don’t give up. This shot ended up on GoPro’s social channels, on a billboard in Munich, Germany and as the overhead retail display in every Target store. A massive accomplishment and one my son is very proud of. I hooked two stretchy bungee cables to each other and wrapped them around the chains on this swing. He got to work on some new bodyboard moves, and find tons of interesting sea life in the low tide puddles on beautiful Coronado beach. There were sand dollars everywhere and a bunch can be seen in the foreground in this image. We even found lots of baby squid in there. The whole evening was quadruple awesome when the conditions are like this and you’re with the one you love on your home beach. This is where I grew up surfing and the beach my Dad took care of so only fitting Z learns the ins and outs here. One, I’m a little too buoyant when I want to dive deep for a photo shoot. It’s as if my stomach, spleen and kidneys decide they want to sabotage my plan by all inhaling at once turning me into a bobber. So I came up with what I thought was a great plan. I’ll get one of these popular over-under-with-your-limbs-flailing-about shots and beat my stomach, spleen and kidneys at their own game. As I attempted this, my vengeful grin quickly faded as I realized I’m not nearly buoyant enough. I looked like a complete kook trying to get this pic. It felt like it took an hour and my flailing about ran the risk of signaling the lifeguards that I needed help. Anyone who doesn't read this caption will certainly view this image as a paragon of illustrated tropical relaxation, but they'll be fooled by the laid-back form in the calm sea of green. Getting to know them and their stories was both heartbreaking and eye-opening to the fact that so many of them were veterans, who our country seemed to forget about once the horrors of what they’d gone through or what they may have come home to left them dependent on substances, or just hard to deal with, in general. One man, in particular just found out that he was set to inherit enough money to get him off the street, but he had polluted himself so badly through substance abuse to the point that his liver was failing and he only had weeks left to live. He lived them out in a bed in a hotel with fresh, clean clothes for the first time in years. Before I left I did weeks of research into not only location, techniques and the metal sculpted desert inhabitants, but lots of research also went in to the living, breathing ones we may encounter as well. It was on my mind constantly, the thought of an encounter with a rattlesnake. That is, until you are several hours in to the creative process, checking and sharing camera settings, and light painting the serpent sculpture with a flashlight. It is right around this point, when you forget all you researched and are in the creative moment that you hear a rattle under your feet in the complete darkness. This is an experience I will never forget, just like the experience of seeing and photographing the sculptures of Galleta Meadows scattered throughout the beautiful desert.
